In all the years I have been working with productivity teams, I am always amazed at just how many of them still believe that stress and fatigue do not impact the bottom line of office productivity or staff health.

Well, I am here to tell you that nothing could be further from the truth!

It breaks my heart, but most of these office workers are needlessly headed for disaster. And the worst part is: it just doesn’t have to happen.

If you would like your office to avoid this fate (and I KNOW you do!) here is an easy way to de-stress and re-energize a fatigued brain at the office. And the best part is that it feels like child’s play!

Depending on your office set-up all your staff can do this at once or you can schedule groups to go to your activity room every 15 minutes to de-stress and re-energize their brains in this way.

At first they will laugh at this unusual activity, which by the way, is called Snakes in the Jungle, but laughter is half the point. Laughter is one of the few activities that is able to raise the amperage in the whole brain, and that’s good!

To illustrate the effect of this activity, have each staff member create a BEFORE rating on this “brain energy/brain readiness scale: 1 means the brain feels like napping. 10 means the brain feels ready to tackle any challenge.

Now each person take a ball, bean bag, pencil, crumpled piece of paper or anything you can pass from hand to hand. The Snakes in the Jungle routine goes like this: pass ball behind neck, in front of chest, behind butt, under one knee, under the other knee, overhead, behind butt, overhead, behind butt, over head, behind butt. Repeat the routine for 15 minutes.

Several things are happening, besides laughter. (I warned you that it would feel like child’s play.) At first you will notice that you are trying to focus, thinking about the task, trying to remember the routine, and judging your performance.

The tipping point comes when you notice you have let all that thinking go and you seem to be doing the activity in your sleep. At this point your brain has entered The Play Brain where your brain can let go of stress and re-energize. By the way, this state is also The Zone where athletic performance is easy and amazing!

Make sure each staff member determines an AFTER score on the 1-10 brain energy/brain readiness scale. Unless the person is critically fatigued and should not be at work, each staff member should notice an improvement.

De-stressing and re-energizing the brain is the goal. You are also refreshing the muscles and circulation in the wrists, neck, shoulders, and back. What a relief especially after working over a desk, or driving for long periods.

In addition you are physically crossing the midlines which divide your body into left/right, top/bottom, front/back. This particular physical action blows the rust out of corresponding brain pathways, readying the brain for best performance.

No matter how long you have been in business, chances are you have never done this exercise before. This is what cutting edge brain health looks like! Don’t you love it? How much did it cost? Be bold. Be innovative. Daily sessions are the key. After, no, because of the laughter, your staff will thank you for it.

Want the best productivity and top staff health? The good news is you can implement the simple routine I have outlined to stop brain stress and fatigue problems in your office and to ensure that your office productivity is optimum right to the end of the day.
