Dealing with a difficult boss maybe the most challenging task in your entire work life, especially if you are a secretary or an executive assistant.
There are even times that your problem with your boss’ unpredictable mood is further aggravated by his high expectations towards the quality and quantity of your work output. Sometimes you think that the boss is becoming unreasonable for giving you piles of workload to be accomplished only within a short period of time.
If only you don’t need this job so bad, you might have resigned a long time ago. However, while you haven’t found any alternative source of income yet, you still need to perform in your current job.
How then can you manage a difficult boss?
1. Arm yourself with a cheerful attitude. Greet the boss with a smile at all times. Sometimes, the boss may not return the smile to you, but later on, you will notice that his mood will somehow lighten and you will never know that the sudden change was just because of your simple smile.
2. Understand his pressures. Keep in mind that the boss has bosses too. Due to the various work pressures and deadlines that the boss has to meet every day, his mood might be hard to predict. Do not add up to your boss’ pressures. In times when you notice hysteria in his voice, follow his directions with a sense of urgency but make sure to maintain a certain level of composure. Remember, it is still best to work with grace under pressure.
3. Be willing to let your boss take the credit. Congratulate him for his achievements. Always give him the compliment without bitterness or hesitation, even though in reality, you were the one who actually drafted his presentation.
4. Do not bomb your boss with a lot of problems. Assess his mood. Find the right time. If it appears that the boss can still take another stressful situation, then, go ahead and tell him about the concerns of the company one after the other and be sure to suggest possible solutions. Never ever inform him of another problem especially if he is already stressed. Otherwise, the boss will get irritated and you will regret that you ever spoke to him that day.
5. Handle his schedule effectively. Iron out the conflicts in his daily appointments. Inform him about the possible overlaps and consult him about his priorities. Of course, you don’t want your boss to receive negative feedback from the company’s clients and from his superiors, and also, you don’t want yourself to be reprimanded by your boss as a consequence.
It is true that the boss acts as your manager. However it also true, that you as his secretary or executive assistant must learn how to manage him to maintain that smooth and more comfortable business relationship.
